I Love Guinea Pigs

We just got a new guinea pig. This is our 4th. Our first was Alice. She died a couple weeks ago. We had her for 3 1/2 years. Then we got Mimi. I'm pretty sure Mimi was sick when we got her from the pet store. She died a few months after we got her. Our 3rd pig is Pooky. She is still alive. Ben and I were pretty upset when Alice died, more so than the kids. We debated wether we should get another one, or just get rid of Pooky and be done with pets for a while. We deciced to get another pig.

Guinea Pigs are social animals. They are happier when they have other guinea pig friends around. If we were going to keep Pooky, we would need to get her a friend. Ben took the kids to the pet store and bought Buffy. Her full name being: Buffy The Guinea Pig Slayer Rasmussen. The kids named her. (I suggested Buffy or Spike). The kids came up with the middle name. Buffy is really cute. Usually we get short hair pigs. Buffy is a spiky haired one. Her and Pooky get along really well.

Guinea Pigs are awesome pets. They are pretty easy to take care of, and they are really cute. Having had 2 sick pigs, I've done a lot of research on them. I've learned a lot. The internet has some great GP websites. I would love to some day have a guinea pig compound. A big place to have a bunch of them running around, squeeking and being cute.

As soon as I figure how to post some pics, I'll post some of our pigs.

So, are they social animals? Do they like being held? Are the clean? Do they squeek a lot? I am very interested in this.

For the first week or so they are shy. They warm up pretty quickly to people. Most of them do like to be held. They will purr when you pet them. They seem to squeek more when they are younger. The older they get the less excitable they are. They will squeek loudly when they are hungry or thirsty. They are pretty clean. You'd have to change the bedding sooner if you have more than one. We just put recycled newspaper in their cage. Pine bedding is bad for them. I'll post some good info websites you could go to.
