The Couch...(my new best friend)

Hello, blog world. It's been a while. I've been busy avoiding house work and watching tv on DVD. I am ready for this writers strike to be over with. We are running out of new shows on DVD to watch.

Not too much going on. Ben is unemployed (for almost 2 months). I'm still pregnant(23 weeks). Today is Claire's 5th birthday. I finally got around to reading another book, John Adams by David Mccullough.

Ben's Unemployment:

With Ben being home all day, I found it hard to stick to my regular daily routine. Not really sure why. All he really did to interrupt my daily routine was to be on the computer when I usually use it. It took almost a month for me to feel like my life was getting back to a normal routine. When we would occasionally end up in the same room. We'd look at each other for a minute, then I would say "You really need to get a job". It's funny, you'd think I'd get him to do some of the things around the house I've been wanting him to do. A few days a go he asked me to make a list of some stuff for him to do around the house, we both thought it was amusing that we had waited so long to do that, Now that he may actually do the things on my list, I'm sure he'll get a job any minute. Hmmm....we should have written a list 2 months ago.

Pregnancy:

I seem to be past the nasty nausea part. I've had more energy lately. I'm hoping to get an ultrasound soon so we can find out what sex the baby is.
The baby has sarted moving, which is always exciting, if a little strange. Four more months to go!

Claire's B-day:

This year we just had a small family party. Claire asked for only one thing this year. The new barbie that has a butterfly on it's arm. When she opened it, she was so excited she shouted,"Hallelulah!!"(She mispronounced it a little.) as she jumped up and down. For me, being the person who bought it for her, it was very satisfying.

John Adams:

A great book. John Adams was never one of my favorite founding fathers. This book completely changed my mind. I think I learned more about the birth of our nation from this book than any I've read so far. Since John Adams was an avid letter writer, I think we get a much more personal knowledge of him than of any other founding father. I got teary eyed when he died, even though it was almost 200 years ago. Every time I read about this part of history, I get excited when I get to the part were we declare independence. The more I read about this time period, the more I dislike Thomas Jefferson. I need to read a Jefferson biography, just so I can judge a little more fairly. --I highly recommend this book!

Another Ornament

I found another paper ornament I want to make. I made the other ones I posted about. Elise and Jake liked making them, and they turned out pretty cool. I may have to make these ones too.

I've been thinking, maybe one of these years I'll decorate my tree with a retro theme. I really like these glass ornaments. And here is one shaped like a cupcake. And diamond shaped ones. Every once in a while I think about putting tinsel on the tree. But I don't think Ben would let me.

Almost Christmas

Since last year was so so hectic around Christmas, with us moving, I've been hoping this year would be a little less stressful.

I always get all these fun ideas, but never seem to get around to doing them. I see all these cute crafts, yummy recipes, or cute handmade gifts. Then I remember I haven't done any present shopping or done any decorating. Claire has been begging me all week to get out the xmas decorations. I'm hoping to get around to it this weekend. One of these years I'll plan ahead so I can be a little more relaxed. Before having kids, I had no idea how much work it was.

Luckily, we still have month. I would really like to do some fun stuff with the kids. I saw these homemade ornaments. I think they look really easy to make. I'm going to try and come up with a few more crafts and some recipes to make.

I also like to keep a Christmas binder. It helps me organize my gift lists--what I want to buy, what I have, what I want to make..... I get the worksheets from this site. It helps me a lot.

This year we will be spending Christmas Eve and Christmas morning with Ben's family. We may go see my family for Christmas dinner, if Ben doesn't have to work the next day. I love being able to spend time with family. I think it makes the holiday season even more special . Even though Ben's family only lives a few miles away, it still seems hard to find time to see each other. Life can get so busy.

If I find any good crafts or recipes, I'll pass them along.

maggots are so gross

For the past few weeks we have been having a moth problem. I noticed they were mostly around our pantry/kitchen area. They are small brown moths. A few days ago I was making Claire some chocolate milk. I took a sip to make sure the chocolate to milk ratio was right. I got more than just chocolate milk. There was a piece of something solid in the sip I took. I spit it out. It was a maggot. In my mouth. Amazingly, I did not vomit. I've been having issues with nausea since becoming pregnant. This did not help. Even though it's been a few days, I still get sick to my stomach when I think about.

I decided to look up these moths on the internet. I found out they are Indian Meal Moths. I found where they were living in my pantry. A bag of birdseed and squirrel food. I got rid of them and any opened package in my pantry. I'm hoping the moths will be gone for good. I'll probablly never drink chocolate milk again.

A few weeks ago the kids did a little poetry reading for Ben's parents(in person) and my parents (via the phone). It was written by Jake.

here comes halloween.

My kids have figured out what they want to be for Halloween. Elise wants to be a bag of sour patch kids. Jake wants to be Mr. Krabs from Spongebob. Claire is going to use Elise's witch costume from 2 years ago. So that's 2 costumes I need to make. Hopefully they'll turn out ok. I love making costumes. I am not much of a seamstress, but I do ok with a glue gun.

This past Friday was my birthday. It was also the REAL Columbus day. Ben and I went out to Carrabbas for dinner. I was craving some of their calamari. We were going to go see a movie, but nothing looked very interesting, so we went and rented some movies.. We watched Miss Potter and Blades of Glory. Both were pretty good.

Ben has been busy on the weekends doing his photography stuff. It'll be nice when he starts bringing in some extra money. It does sort of suck that he isn't home on Saturdays. That's usually when I recover from the previous week and do a lot of my errands.

I just finished reading Team of Rivals. It's about Abraham Lincoln and his cabinet members. It was really good. Abraham Lincoln was pretty awesome. When it came near the end of the book, and I knew he was going to die, I kept putting off finishing it. I really didn't want him to die. Stupid sad endings.

Jake Update

Jake and I met with his neurologist on Monday. She said the MRI was fine. So, for now we are trying to figure out what might be triggering his migraines. The doctor prescribed him some drugs for when he gets them. I never knew there were so many different things that can trigger migraines; certain foods, sounds, smells, stress, and lack of sleep(and any combination). It'll be a challenge to try and figure this out.

Lovin' the Wall Stickers

While reading the many design blogs I've become addicted too, I have discovered wall stickers. They aren't really anything new, but they seem to be a fad right now. I really like this sites stickers: dVider; I like their Nature series and their Kids series. I think it's great way to give a room some personality. The best thing about them, is that they are stickers, so easy!

Here are 2 of my favorites:

I love that you have a choice of colors as well.

I'll probablly have to go through this all over again when Claire goes to school. (my kids are wicked smart ;-) ) (Im prity sure thay git it frum mee.)

It looks like I will still be watching Hannah. Things didn't go too well at her new daycare place. I'm not sure how I feel about it. I think it's probablly for the best. Now I won't have to stress about loosing that extra income. Apparently, the new daycare place had too many kids. and not enough supervision. Hannah threw a fit every time she had to go. Claire is very excited to have her back. We'll see how it goes.

life & stuff

I thought I would write a little about the miscellaneous stuff that's happened over the past few weeks.

Jake:

Jake has been having bad headaches for the past 4-5 months. They were happening at last 3 times a week. I took him to the doctor. His doctor did some tests, and those came out ok.(blood, vision, hearing, urine) So, he sent Jake to a neurologist. The neurologist asked us a bunch of questions and figured he was probablly having migraines. She prescribed him some medicine and gave me a diary to keep track of the headaches. She gave me a list of foods that can trigger migraines. She also scheduled a CT scan to make sure there wasn't something else causing the headaches.

A couple of weeks ago, Jake had the CT scan. It showed an abnormal vein on the right side of his brain. Apparently a lot of people have abnormal veins, they just never know about them, unless they get a CT scan for some non-related reason. Jake's CT scan was a pretty awful experience. We ended up having to wait 2 hours in the waiting room. (One of the machines wasn't working) For the last 20 min of the wait, Jake had to sit with an I.V. needle sticking out of his arm. He looked horrible, he told me he thought he was going to faint. They finally called us in. The actual scan went fine, Jake thought it was cool. After seeing the results of the CT scan, the neurologists scheduled Jake for an MRI to get a better picture of the vein.

The MRI was yesterday. I was really worried about it. I said a lot of prayers that we wouldn't have to wait long, and that Jake wouldn't freak out during the test. Thankfully, we didn't have to wait at all. Jake wasn't too happy that he was going to get another I.V. The MRI took about 35 minutes. Jake had to stay perfectlly still this whole time. He did awesome. I would have totally freaked. He did start to twitch about 15 minutes in, but then he fell asleep. I was so relieved.

Jake has a check up with the neurologist on Monday. I'm hoping she'll have the results of the MRI by then.

Other Stuff:

-I am no longer doing daycare. The mom decided to have them go to a daycare/preschool place instead. I have had mixed feelings about this. Happy to have a break, it was a bit stressful. Scared for the loss of money. (It has really helped us out with our new mortgage) And worried that Hannah would do ok at the new place.

-School has started back up. Yeah! It's been so quiet around here with just me and Claire. Elise and Jake seem to be adapting well to their new school.

-Ben and I have tickets to see 3 different concert in the next 2 months. We are going to see: Rilo Kiley, Say Hi to Your Mom, and Morrissey. Can't wait.

Reunion/Beach Camping

We got back Saturday night from our week long vacation. We had a lot of fun, but man we were tired when it was all over. I thought for sure the kids would spontaneously combust. Here's a run down of what we did:

Saturday 8/11:
-Drove to Nicole's
-Went to my Aunt Sandy's house for reunion.
-Visited with family. Spent most of the day in or around the pool. Ben and Elise got some jet skiing in.
-Kids played on an inflatable moon bounce and a huge slip and slide.
-Late night karaoke. Ben sang-Like a Virgin-(very amusing) Claire and some other little girls sang-Twinkle Little Star. I believe there may have been some Britney Spears and Back Street Boys as well.
-I played a little air hockey. Totally beat my dad.
-Went back to Nicole's and went to bed, didn't sleep too well.

Sunday:
-Did more of the same. Photographer came and took a big family picture. We were all in our matching reunion shirts. The shirts were yellow, not the best color for a red head.
-I had a great time catching up with cousins that I hadn't seen in a while. It was great to see them and to see their kids.

Monday:
-Went to Assateague with Nicole &Co., my cousin Chris and his family, my cousin Tina and her daughter, my Aunt Jundy and Unlce David, and my mom. It was a great day at the beach, even though we were all completely exhausted.

Tuesday:
-Left that morning to come home.
-Got home. Crashed.

Wednesday:
-Got ready for camping trip.

Thursday:
-Left for Camping trip around noonish. Got some bad traffic heading down to VA beach.
-Arrived at campsite and set up our tent. (We camped at First Landing; which is actually on the bay, not the ocean)) Waited for Debbie's family to arrive.
-When Debbie's family go there we cooked hot dogs over the fire.
-Despite it being dark, we were all itching to get a little beach time in.
-Decided to head back to camp when we saw lighting.
-Went to bed. Had a pretty bad storm throughout the night. Nobody slept very much. Luckily our tent didn't have any bad leaking. The Rodericks and Ben's parents weren't so lucky.

Friday:
-Weather was better. Things were able to dry out. Spent most of the day at the beach. Debbie and Melinda made some yummy chicken stew and peach cobbler in a dutch oven.(Which took a lot longer to cook then everyone thought it would, but tasted pretty darn good) We slept a lot better this night.

Saturday:
-Woke up to really nice weather. Packed up most of our stuff and went to the beach for a couple of hours before we had to head home.
-It ended up taking us about 5 hours to get home. (usually a 2 1/2 - 3 hour drive) There was a big accident. It SUCKED.

Camping Synopsis:
Other then wet tents and horrible traffic, it was a great camping experience. The placed where we camped is awesome. There was hardly anyone on the beach, the camp site was a short walk from the beach and bathroom. There were trees all around to give our campsite a little privacy. It really is a nice park. Much more relaxing then going to busy VA beach or Ocean city. I liked that we were on the bay were the water was calmer. We all talked about going again next year and staying for a whole week.

I stole this pic from my cousin Mike. This is my Aunt Sandy's back yard. You can see the moon bounce and slip and slide.
The yellow reunion shirts. You can see the back of my head. I had recently dyed my hair . (this pic is also stolen from Mike)

My new shoes rock!

I recently bought some new shoes. It was a total impulse, must have right now buy. I was at Kohl's looking for back to school stuff, and just happened to pass through the women's shoe department. I saw these and knew they had to be mine.

I really have no self control when I see a pair of shoes I like.
